Federico Naef is a Swiss photographer whose practice spans artistic and commissioned photography, moving between portraiture, fashion, beauty, still life and food. Working in both analogue and digital formats, his approach is shaped by a keen awareness of contemporary culture, social phenomena and the visual qualities of the world around him. At the centre of his work lies an enduring interest in the image itself: its capacity not merely to document a moment, but to transform it into something with a presence and meaning of its own.
Born in Zurich in 1962, Naef developed his photographic language largely outside formal education. His early fascination with cameras was reinforced by Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, whose portrayal of a photographer in 1960s London prompted him to leave his studies and pursue photography professionally.
His formative years were spent in close proximity to both fashion and the press. He worked as a freelance assistant to fashion photographers and later as a paparazzo for several publishing houses—experiences that demanded very different ways of observing, anticipating and constructing an image. This broad foundation would subsequently inform an increasingly diverse practice across fashion, beauty and advertising. While people initially occupied the foreground of his work, still life and food photography gradually became part of his repertoire.
Over the course of his career, Naef’s work has taken him beyond the commercial sphere into cultural and artistic contexts. His experience across different photographic disciplines led to his appointment as photographer for the Zurich Opera Ballet, while extended periods spent in international fashion capitals and participation in exhibitions abroad further contributed to the development of his practice.
Among his distinctions is an ADC Gold award for Amnesty International’s Not Here But Now campaign, alongside the “Keeper of the Flame” award.
Rather than adhering to a single genre, Naef’s body of work reflects a career built on curiosity, observation and continuous exploration. Today, he lives and works near Zurich, Switzerland.
